Hello Class, Welcome to the Latin Forum. I am your patron and Teacher. They call me Gino. The Latin is a very complex language using lots of grammar. The vocabulary however, is very small. As a result, any word can mean many different things, for example the verb in latin "demonstrare" means "to demonstrate, reveal, mention, refer to, allege, prove, represent, or recommend". For many, this can cause problems... and, it can cause many questions for debate and academic discussion. You may be asking "then..... why should we learn it?". I will tell you why, Because the Latin Language can be applied to English (saxonem) and other languages. First, we will learn the Latin Alphabet...
A = Ah (ah in Father)
B = Be (bay)
C = Ce (kay)
D = De (day)
E = Eh (Ey in hey)
F = Ef
G = Ge (gay)
H = Ha
I = Ee (ee in weed) Also used in place of J
K = Ka
L = El
M = Em
N = En
O = Oh (Oa in loathe)
P = Pe
Q = Qu (koo)
R = Err (Trill the R)
S = Es
T = Te (tay)
V = Oo (oo in food)
X = Ix
Z = Zeta (after the greek letter)
LEARN THIS ALPHABET. Notice there are no J, U, W, and Y... that's because J and U were created do differentiate between Consonantal I and Consonantal V (oo). W is an english character remnant from Anglo Saxon, and Y and Z are greek letters borrowed for greek words.
That's it for todays lesson, enjoy learning latin on this forum.
